The Beginning

The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 we all know and love today, came to life from a man named Carroll Shelby. Carroll was in born in 1923 in Leesburg, TX. In fact even in Carroll’s early childhood he was always fascinated with speed. Mr. Shelby began driving race cars professionally in 1952 at age 29. In 1960, soon after retiring from his race car driving career he open the Shelby-American Performance Equipment and Customization Company. A couple years later in 1962, he partnered with Dave Evans of the Ford Motor Company. Together, they began production on the Ford Cobra. It is said that the Cobra design was decided on after a cobra appeared to Carroll Shelby in his sleep.

In 1965 Ford and Shelby-American began production on the Mustang based Shelby GT350. Which then lead to the Shelby GT500 in 1967. After 1968, the Shelby GT models were built in house by Ford Motor Company.
