What is a Transfer Case?

The purpose of engaging the four-wheel-drive (4WD) on your SUV or truck is to gain traction. Shifting between two-wheel and 4WD takes place in the transfer case behind the transmission. On newer models, your vehicle will automatically determine if 4WD is necessary and shift for you.

There are either gears or a chain inside the case that transfers the motion to the front and rear axles through the use of the driveshaft. The main point is to slow the wheels’ speed on your vehicle, so they all rotate at the same rate.

Some symptoms, such as grinding gears or difficulty shifting, could indicate that the transfer case has an oil leak. It’s common for seals to wear out over time.
